Furniture for UAE humidity has to survive a swing more than a level. Indoors, air conditioning keeps rooms dry for most of the year. Outdoors, and inside a villa shut up with the AC off over a summer break, the air turns heavy and damp. Timber, glue lines, fabric and metal each react to that swing differently, and the pieces that last are chosen with it in mind.

Which woods and boards stay stable?

Solid wood takes on moisture and gives it back, swelling across the grain and shrinking again, which is why a solid-timber door that closed well in the dry months can bind in the damp ones. Engineered boards move far less. Plywood, built from cross-laid layers, holds its shape; MDF is flat and even but swells wherever water reaches a bare edge. Moisture-resistant grades of both exist and belong in the order by name. A veneer over a stable core gives the look of solid timber with little of its movement.

Solid timber still has its place in frames, legs and table tops fixed so the wood can move. What fails is solid wood glued rigidly into a frame, or a panel finished on the front and left bare behind, which takes on moisture unevenly and bows.

What finishes and fabrics cope best?

The finish decides how fast moisture reaches the wood. A lacquer or oil that covers every face, hidden sides included, slows the exchange; one applied only where it shows leaves the piece to move unevenly. Ask whether backs, undersides and drawer interiors are sealed.

Fabrics trade comfort against resilience. Natural fibres breathe but mark and fade. Leather dries in cool, conditioned air and cracks in sun beside a window. Performance fabrics made for outdoor use resist damp and fading at the cost of some softness, and removable covers let a sofa survive a spill or a damp summer.

How should a new piece settle into the room?

Let timber pieces stand in the room they will live in before the final fitting, with the air conditioning running as it will day to day, so doors and drawers are adjusted to the room rather than to the workshop. Leave a small gap between a large cabinet and an outside wall. Keep solid timber out of the direct blast of an air-conditioning grille. And keep the rooms conditioned, or dehumidified, while the home is closed for the summer.

In sea-facing communities, from Palm Jumeirah in Dubai to Saadiyat Beach and Al Raha Beach in Abu Dhabi, Maryam Island in Sharjah and Al Zorah in Ajman, salt joins the damp. Plain steel hinges, screws and runners rust first, and the stain spreads into the timber around them. Specify stainless steel or brass fittings by maker, and ask what protects metal legs and frames, since a powder coat or plating guards the steel only while it stays unbroken.

Outdoor and majlis furniture

Garden and terrace seating needs materials built for outside: frames that do not rust, fabrics rated for sun and damp, and cushions that dry quickly and go under cover between uses. Shade does more than any finish, and a pergola or awning brings its own approval, as the majlis design guide sets out. Outdoor fitting follows the calendar too: the federal midday break halts sun-exposed work between 12:30 and 3 pm from 15 June to 15 September.

What to write into the order

1. The core of each part: plywood, moisture-resistant board or solid timber, named in the order.
2. Sealing on every face and edge, backs, undersides and drawer interiors included.
3. Fittings by maker and metal, stainless steel or brass in coastal homes.
4. The fabric by name, and whether it is rated for outdoor use.
5. The remedy if a door warps or a panel bows within the agreed period.
