Timelines
The design itself runs on the firm's own programme. Around it run two clocks with published numbers, approvals and the hours a building allows work, and a third set by the workshops: the lead time on anything made to order.
The programme
How long an interior design project takes depends less on the designer than on the three calendars running around the design: approvals, the hours a building allows work, and the lead time on anything made to order. Design firms set their own programmes, and none of the firms on our fee page publishes a standard duration. The useful answer is a programme in weeks, written into the proposal and built on the published numbers below.
How long does an interior design project take?
No standard is published, so each firm's own design and build programme is the answer to ask for, in weeks and in writing. The approval clock around it is published: 3 business days for an Emaar NOC on a complete file, 2 or 5 working days for minor or major works in Town Square, 7 working days for an Abu Dhabi maintenance permit and 10 for a building permit, and 2 days after inspection for Ajman's maintenance permit. Dubai Holding communities give approved works six months to finish.
| Stage | What happens | Whose clock |
|---|---|---|
| Brief and survey | Rooms measured and photographed, the scope written down | Yours and the designer's |
| Concept and layouts | Design direction, furniture plans and revisions | The designer's programme |
| Working drawings | Ceilings, lighting, joinery and finishes drawn to build from | The designer's programme |
| Approvals | The developer's NOC, and a permit where the work needs one | Published turnarounds |
| Fit-out | Building, joinery and finishes on site | The contractor's programme, inside the building's hours |
| Furniture and styling | Pieces made, delivered and placed | Workshop lead times and delivery windows |
| Snagging and handover | Defects listed, fixed and signed off | The contract, and community inspections where they apply |
Only the approvals stage has numbers any authority publishes. The design stages are the firm's to promise, and the site stages are the contractor's, limited by the building's rules on noise, lifts and deliveries.
| Where | Approval | Published time |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai, Emaar communities | Minor or major works NOC | 3 business days from a complete file |
| Dubai, Town Square | Minor works or major works | 2 or 5 working days |
| Dubai, Dubai Holding communities | Request before work starts | 24 hours ahead by app, 72 by email |
| Dubai Municipality | Decoration permit, unit over 100 sq m | Self-issued by the contractor; completion certificate electronic |
| Dubai Municipality | Modifications, service 4127 | 3 working days |
| DDA zones | Building Modification Permit | 2 working days |
| Abu Dhabi | Maintenance permit or building permit | 7 or 10 working days |
| Ajman | Maintenance permit | 2 days after a site inspection |
| Sharjah | Maintenance permit; drawing approval | No processing time published |
Each clock runs from a complete file, so a missing drawing or an unsigned consent letter delays the start rather than the finish. Which Dubai jobs need a permit at all is set out under DM approval; most need none.
Count the noisy hours a building allows each day, because they set the pace of demolition, drilling and fixing. An Emaar villa allows five, from 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday. Emaar's apartment rules allow six, starting an hour earlier. Dubai Holding communities allow the same six, 9:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:00, with minor works running Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM and major works on weekdays from 7 AM to 5 PM. Town Square allows work from 09:00 to 17:00 on business days, with no overnight workers.
In Abu Dhabi, Aldar's handbooks stop noisy work at 8:00 PM in most communities and at 6:00 PM at Saadiyat Beach. Under Dubai Municipality's construction safety guide, noisy work between 8 pm and 6 am needs a night work permit. Any outdoor part of the job also pauses from 12:30 to 3 pm between 15 June and 15 September, under the federal midday break.
A duration in weeks for each stage, the approvals it assumes and who files them, the working hours it plans around, and dates for anything made or imported. Tie payments to stages rather than to the calendar, and write in what happens when a date slips; the contract clauses page covers the wording.
Dubai Holding's 2026 rulebook sets one outside limit: approved works must be completed within six months. Its inspectors check within about 21 days of the owner's notice of completion, and anything that fails has 30 days to be put right. We ask every firm for a programme in weeks with its proposal, so the design proposals you compare show time as well as money.
